The Royal Palace of Madrid is the largest palace in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world, covering more than 135,000 m² and comprising 3,418 rooms. Built in the 18th century on the site of the former Alcázar of Madrid, which was destroyed by fire in 1734, it was designed as the official residence of the Spanish monarchs and first used by Charles III in 1764.

Today it remains in use as a venue for state ceremonies, receptions and official events, although the Royal Family does not live there. During your visit, you can explore its grand halls, the Royal Chapel, the Crown Room and the Royal Armoury, as well as discover works of art and decorations by artists such as Giaquinto, Tiepolo and Mengs.

Situated next to the Plaza de Oriente, the Palace offers a unique insight into several centuries of Spain’s political, artistic and cultural history.
