Located in the old Convent of the Merced Calzada, the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville was founded as "Museum of paintings" on September 16, 1835, with the works coming from convents and monasteries disentailed by the government of Mendizábal. The building is one of the best examples of Andalusian mannerism. Juan de Oviedo and de la Bandera was the architect and sculptor who devised the construction project, promoted by Fray Alonso de Monroy.
